She was so determined to raise awareness and cash for Diabetes UK that she shed her locks in the middle of Mirfield high street.

Carol, 46, of Wilson Avenue, Mirfield, took the plunge of Sunday afternoon with the help of hairdresser Pam Inham from Salon One.

She said: “I couldn’t eat anything beforehand because I was really nervous. Everybody was watching as they drove by.

“It was a lot faster than I expected. The main thing I remember is how cold my head felt. I have great sympathy with my husband now!”

The fundraiser was held in the car park of Tesco Express in Huddersfield Road, where Carol works.

The company has chosen Diabetes UK as its charity of the year.

Carol’s mum was diagnosed with diabetes almost 40 years ago and a co-worker was diagnosed six years ago so Carol was keen to support the fundraising in any way she could.

“It looks like it’s going to be about £500 and Tesco is going to put in another 20 per cent,” she said. “I feel like it’s been worthwhile. A lot of people are talking about it when they come in the store or see me in the street.

“A lot of people are saying my new look suits me. It’s quite good in a way, but I’m finding it cold. When I start work at 5,30am or I restock the fridges I have to wear a hat!”
