More than 30 schools in north Kirklees are closed or partially closed as a result.

The day of action is being held in protest to excessive workloads, the introduction of performance related pay, the dismantling of the national pay frame work and changes to pensions.

The NUT said the issues would not only affect teachers but would also harm the standards of education for all pupils.

It said industrial action was inevitable when Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove had refused to listen to the concerns of its members.

NUT regional secretary Ian Stevenson said: “Teachers’ levels of workload are unacceptable. The Government’s own survey showed that primary teachers work nearly 60 hours per week and secondary teachers nearly 56 hours a week.

“The Government is pushing ahead with performance related pay despite all the international evidence which shows that it doesn’t work, creates unnecessary bureaucracy and is divisive. It will do nothing too improve how teachers teach or how pupils learn.”

He added that teachers did not believe they could work until they were 68 or older to access their full pension.
