Yorkshire Water said the burst pipe at Savile Court at around 5.30am has left some of their customers without water or with low water pressure.

They are on-site dealing with the problem.

Some schools have also been affected.

Old Bank School on Taylor Hall Lane said they had been told it could take four to six hours to return the service.

Headteacher Caroline Walker said the school was closed and they would text parents when the school was re-opened.

She said: “It’s unfortunate but these things happen.”

Castle Hall School has not been affected and Crossley Fields has been affected but is open as usual.

Mayor of Kirklees and Mirfield councillor Coun Martyn Bolt said that Yorkshire Water told him it does not give out replacement water until at least five hours after a reported stoppage and the company described the situation to him as ‘inconvenient’.

Coun Bolt said: “It is unhealthy that people will not be able to flush the toilet and wash before leaving for work.

He added: “At the moment Yorkshire Water are refusing to do anything, it seems to be a lack of customer focus.

“It is not a reasonable response from a 21st century company who make millions of pounds of profit.”

He said the burst pipe has affected around 25,000 to 30,000 people in a one and a half mile radius reaching residents in Mirfield, Norristhorpe, Ravensthorpe and Roberttown. Residents affected are having to buy bottled water but this has put shops on a low supply with some reported to only have flavoured water left.

On Twitter, John Donohoe of Water Royd Avenue told the Reporter he’d been without water since 6am.
