UPDATE: Mirfield cycling legend Brian Robinson hospitalised after collision with car in Dewsbury

Mr Robinson, 83, was taken to Pinderfields Hospital yesterday afternoon after a crash involving a Volkswagen Passat.

Emergency services were called to Lees Hall Road in Thornhill Lees at around 1.20pm.

He continues to be treated for a serious arm injury.

Mr Robinson’s son-in-law, Kirklees councillor Martyn Bolt, said he had suffered “severe” cuts and bruises, as well as a potential broken collar bone.

“We don’t know whether the driver pulled out from a side road or he swerved,” said Coun Bolt. “But he’s hit the road and there was skin and blood on the road.

“The cuts at his age are quite severe.”

Mr Robinson is being kept in hospital tonight for observations.

Coun Bolt added: “It’s both tragic and ironic that an ambassador for cycling and someone who helped to bring the Tour de France here was brought down within walking distance of his home.

“We hope he’ll be back on his bike soon.”

Mr Robinson, who still lives in Mirfield, was the first British man to complete the Tour de France and the first Brit to win a stage – both in the 1950s.

Sgt Rick Lyon of the Western Area Safer Roads Team, said: “I would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of this collision and either saw the collision itself or the circumstances leading up to it to call either PC Warren Pickard or myself in the Western Area Safer Roads Team on 101.”
