Update: Man charged with sex offender murder refuses to leave cell

A man charged with murder refused to leave his cell for a hearing at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court this morning (Tuesday).

David Anthony Mitchell is accused of killing Robert Edward Hind, a known sex offender who went missing from Dewsbury last week.

The 46-year-old is said to have murdered Mr Hind at Manchester Road in Cowlersley, Huddersfield, on Wednesday.

Mitchell, of the same address, refused to leave the cells to go into the courtroom but the matter was dealt with in his absence.

A bail application could not be considered as the defendant was not in court.

Mitchell will appear at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday at 10am.

Mr Hind, 46, was reported missing on Wednesday evening.

Police yesterday found suspected human remains in the area of the River Colne next to Colne Vale Road in Milnsbridge, Huddersfield.

Officers arrested Mitchell on Sunday and charged him earlier today.

Senior investigating officer Supt Scott Wood said: “A post mortem examination of the suspected human remains recovered from the Colne Vale area of Huddersfield will take place shortly and a formal identification will follow.

“I am continuing to appeal for anyone who can assist in our investigations and the movements of Robert Hind between 9.20am on Wednesday and Saturday.”
