Unbreakable glasses plea for nightclubs

TRADITIONAL pint glasses could be on their way out in a campaign to cut the number of glassing incidents in pubs and clubs.

The POP campaign urges nightspots to switch from glass to polycarbonate beakers, which are virtually unbreakable.

And the UK’s top manufacturer of polycarbonate beakers, BB Plastics, based in Mirfield, is supporting the campaign.

Sales executive Michaela Johnson said: “These glasses are made out of the same stuff as riot shields. It’s one of the strongest plastics there is. Polycarbonates are used anywhere where a break would be dangerous, which is why we make glasses out of them.

“When there is a glassing incident in a nightclub, it has to be closed and it becomes a crime scene. This shouldn’t be happening because there is a solution.”

Ms Johnson said the beakers were so strong they could withstand the weight of an industrial crane.

She said: “You could drop one off the highest skyscraper and it wouldn’t break - it would only bounce.

“Polycarbonate doesn’t have a taste, it doesn’t smell and it doesn’t have a colour. When there is a drink in them you can’t tell the difference. And the drink inside will even stay cooler for longer.”

The POP campaign was started by Marjorie Golding from Milton Keynes after her doorman son Blake needed 50 stitches when he was glassed at work. To see a video of someone trying to destroy the beakers visit our websites.
