Trust gives £30k towards Thornhill park improvements

Thornhill’s Rectory Park will become much easier to use thanks to a £30,000 funding boost.

A small replacement footbridge will be built over the medieval moat of the former Thornhill Hall, raising the height of the bridge to give level access to it from both banks. It is hoped this will encourage older people, or those with disabilities or pushchairs, to use the park. The bridge will be made from timber from a sustainable source.

There will also be a new gently sloping footpath to the footbridge and refurbishment of remaining steps, which are badly degraded. Visitors currently have to walk through mud to reach the bridge.

The £30,983 will also pay for footpath improvements from the Hall Lane pedestrian entrance to the park, along the west side of the moat to the start of the new pathway down to the bridge. The current path is largely unsurfaced and becomes muddy in wet weather.

The works, funded by the SITA Trust, are expected to get underway by September this year. SITA Trust provides funding for projects that enhance communities and enrich nature.

They also gave £20,000 to Thornhill Tennis Club to resurface their crumbling tennis courts earlier in March this year.
