Tributes paid to former rugby league star Carroll

Dean Carroll, a former St Mary’s and St John Fisher pupil, was found collapsed at the family home in Batley by his partner Debbie on Wednesday May 19.

An ambulance was called and he suffered a heart attack while being taken to Dewsbury District Hospital. He suffered further heart attacks and was later transferred to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

His life support was removed on Saturday May 23 and He died the next morning.

His funeral was held yesterday at St Mary’s RC Church in Batley.

Mr Carroll played for Batley Boys and St John Fisher before signing for Bradford Northern, playing his debut aged 17 against Blackpool Borough in 1980.

He went on to play for Carlisle, Warrington and Doncaster.

He leaves behind Debbie, a son, Paul and three grandchildren.

Tributes have been posted on rugby forums and websites.

One says: ‘RIP Dean. A talented rugby player...Condolences to his family. A great rugby league Batley family who have given a lot to the game.’

Mr Carroll’s former team, Warrington Wolves wrote a tribute to their former player on their website, and Bradford Bulls tweeted ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of ex-Bradford Northern star Dean Carroll.’
