Trevor trims up for good cause

Trevor Weston, 70, of Shillbank Lane, Mirfield, has been bringing a dash of Christmas spirit to passengers for the past eight years, to the delight of travellers of all ages.

More recently, he has been collecting money for the World Cancer Research Fund, in memory of his wife, Dorothy, who he lost to the disease five years ago.

As well as his fancy dress escapades, Mr Weston also festoons his bungalow with lights and was putting the finishing touches to them earlier this week in advance of the grand switch-on, which is set for Monday, December 5.

He said: “Passengers on the buses have been giving me money already and I’ve got £165 to send off, even before the lights go on.

“When I’m dressed as Father Christmas you can see the kids pointing me out to their mums and dads as I pull up to the stop.

“It’s great to watch the kids’ faces when the lights go on. The ones from Crossley Fields school walk past on their way home then come back up after tea to see the lights.”

Mr Weston estimates he has spent more than £500 on lights, which usually take two-and-a-half days to put up if the weather is kind.

He also reckons they add around £50 to his electricity bill, but he doesn’t mind one bit.

He said: “I’m not bothered about the cost. It makes people happy – not just the kids, either – and if it helps find a cure for cancer it’s worth every penny.”
