Treasured village bus shelter saved

People in Upper Hopton were angered by a proposal last month to remove the shelter from Hopton Lane.

They were concerned by the prospect of waiting for their buses in the howling gales that batter the village.

But today Metro, which runs the region’s public transport, announced that the shelter would stay.

Coun Eric Firth, deputy chair of Metro, said: “As a result of my referral of this request back to Metro for review, the decision has been taken that the shelter will stay, which I know will be good news to those people in Hopton who do take advantage of it while waiting for their buses.

“As part of its ongoing drive to ensure efficiency and provide local council taxpayers with value for money, Metro does carry out reviews of its 18,000 stops and shelters across West Yorkshire including numbers of people using them.

“However when it is shown that proposed removals would cause hardship – in this case due to the exposed location of the stop – we do listen to local people and, where possible, make an informed, sensitive and sensible decision.”
