Travellers take over Dewsbury and District Hospital staff car park

Travellers have set up camp at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

Overnight, horses and around eight vehicles arrived on the staff car park at the site in Halifax Road.

A member of staff told us that people who work at the hospital are being forced to use visitor and patient car parks – meaning there could be problems when visitors arrive this afternoon.

Kirklees Council said the travellers had moved from the former Topps Tiles premises at Railway Street, Dewsbury, and that the hospital would be applying to the court today. There was likely to be a hearing next week.

A spokesperson for The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are working with all those concerned with this matter to resolve it as quickly as possible.”

Travellers have been moving around sites in Dewsbury for several weeks over the summer.

A small group of travellers has also been at Millbridge Park in Liversedge.

Court proceedings have been started and there will be a hearing on September 17.
