Residents evacuated after fire rips through commercial building

Residents had to be evacuated from their homes in South Elmsall after a huge commercial building fire.

Firefighters were called to the three story building in Barnsley Road at 21.05pm on Tuesday.

Reports came into crews that containers and tyres had been set alight and had spread to the building which was 100 per cent involved.

Twenty people from neighbouring premises and shops had to be evacuated and found refuge at a nearby church.

Temporary accommodation was being found for the residents.

Crews from South Kirby, Pontefract, the aerial appliance from Wakefield and two engines from South Yorkshire have been tackling the blaze and remain at the scene damping down.

An investigation is being launched to establish the cause of the fire.
