Firefighters’ strike continues over Bank Holiday

The Fire Brigades Union industrial action is set to recommence at 2pm today (Saturday)and last until 2am on Sunday.

But it resumes again at 10am on Sunday until 3pm.

The dispute with the Government is over the introduction of a new pension scheme. The dispute began in the Autumn and this weekend is the tenth round of action.

Further action, short of a strike - excluding control members - is expected to start on Sunday at 3.01pm and continue until Noon on Friday.

During the period the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) will be providing a reduced emergency response service.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dave Walton said: “We anticipate having around half our usual fire cover available during this period. We will still be attending incidents, albeit with a reduced capacity, so we are asking the public to do their bit by taking common sense steps to safeguard themselves.

“Take extra care while cooking or driving and if you are having a barbecue this Bank Holiday weekend then bear in mind that cooking and alcohol do not mix.

“Whilst we always advise people to call 999 in the event of an emergency, please try not to tie up fire crews unnecessarily this weekend.

“For example, if you have been locked out of your house or have come across debris in the road there are other agencies which may be able to help with this.”

The dispute is not between the (WYFRA) and its staff.
