Cleckheaton driver with car full of passengers handed covid fines

A driver and its passengers will all be given covid restriction fines as the car they were in was stopped after almost crashing into a police vehicle.

Officers from the Batley and Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team were dealing with a report of a burglary in the Cleckheaton area.

However their attention was drawn to a silver Toyota Yaris as it came around the corner smashing into the curb and nearly hitting the marked police car.

With assistance from West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit the vehicle was stopped a short distance away.

The Yaris was initially seized for a defective and dangerous tyre, but it was later released after it was replaced roadside.

The driver will receive a fine and points regarding the tyre.

However the offending for the driver and their passengers did not stop there.

A spokesperson for the NPT said: "Although extensive checks on the driver and his four passengers came back without issue, they will all be receiving a fine for breaching current covid restrictions as travelling from Derby to West Yorkshire to "just chill officer" is not a valid excuse."
