Network Rail are proposing the closure of the crossing as part of railway line electrification, but locals have raised concerns about this due to a variety of issues such as safety and accessibility.

Concerns were initially raised in 2017, however Network Rail insisted there was no immediate threat to the crossing being closed as they were awaiting on a Department for Transport decision on electrification. Now that electrification has been confirmed, the community is concerned their voices are not being heard in the process.

Tracy Brabin MP visited the site on Saturday, July 18 and spoke to a large group of residents about their views on the level crossing and possible alternatives to the plans drawn up by Network Rail.

Commenting on this, Ms Brabin said “I met with local residents because I wanted to hear their concerns about the closure of Lady Anne crossing. It is clear that the vast majority want the current crossing to remain open, so I would urge Network Rail to do everything they can to not close the crossing whilst still delivering electrification.

“Many people feel as though this decision is being rushed without their input, so it is important that they are heard in the decision-making process.”

Local resident Hazel Julie said: “We are a community group concerned over the future of Lady Anne Crossing which is a much loved feature of the area, well used for essential journeys to work, school and shops as well as leisure.

“It’s possible closure and replacement by a bridge raises many concerns which we were able to share with Tracy. These surround safety, privacy, access and a fear such a large structure will blight our neighbourhood and attract antisocial behaviour.”

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail, said: “No decisions have been taken and we are committed to engaging with residents and community groups. We had a great response to a recent resident survey and that feedback is being used to inform our next steps. We’re aiming to hold a public event in the Autumn to share the latest plans and seek further input from residents.”
