Coun Vivien Lees Hamilton said the town council welcomes the suggestion of a night-time lookout, sent in a letter to the town council last week. This is despite fellow councillors Kath and James Taylor suggesting there was little chance of it happening.

“I don’t know why coun (Kath) Taylor thought the letter was a wind-up,” she added. “The safety of businesses in the centre of town is something we on the town council take very seriously.

“We are going to ask the group in question to submit a formal grant application. And we would definitely take a look at it.

“As we are devolved more powers in the future, this is the sort of thing we would be able to fund.”

She also rubbished suggestions that a warden would act as a one-man vigilante, stating they would simply be there to keep watch and call the police if they saw anything.

“This is not even the first time this has been mentioned and it is not a new idea and hopefully we can give serious consideration to it in future.”
