Mr Burton said: “It was a real privilege for myself and Musharaf to be asked to go along. It’s still very strange to hear people call your name but people had a lot of lovely things to say about the programme and Thornhill.”

Coun Masood Ahmed, chair of Dewsbury Area Committee, said: “The Christmas Lights switch on event was a great success of which Dewsbury can be proud. Thank you to everyone who turned out on such a cold day to enjoy the event.

“Large crowds gathered on Saturday afternoon to enjoy a celebration of the talents of the town with representatives from Dewsbury stage coach, Dewsbury Rams, Gary Sykes and Mr Burton and Musharaf Asghar from Educating Yorkshire providing the entertainment.”
