Srebrenica Memorial Day – occurring nationwide on July 11 – will remember the 8,372 men and boys who were murdered in the eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina town in July 1995.

Kirklees Council are hosting a private event, The Srebrenica Genocide: Young People’s perspectives, at Dewsbury Town Hall on Tuesday July 7.

Alex Ross-Shaw, Yorkshire and North East board chairman of organisers Remembering Srebrenica, said: “I am proud of the dedication and hard work of our volunteers.

“Engaging with our local communities allows us to use the lessons from Srebrenica to challenge hatred and intolerance. This will help us to build a better, safer and more cohesive society.”

The Dewsbury event is one of many which will happen around Yorkshire. On July 4, there will be a special stone laying at Bradford Town Hall in Centenary Square at 11am. And a Srebrenica Memorial will take place at Leeds Civic Hall on July 9 from noon-2pm.

Remembering Srebrenica Chairman Dr Waqar Azmi OBE said: “This year is the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica – the single greatest atrocity committed on European soil since the Second World War and a brutal reminder of man’s inhumanity to man.”
