Reports that the George, in Parkside, Cleckheaton, is now shut have been confirmed locally.

Coun Andrew Pinnock (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton) said: “All I know is that I went passed the other day and it was all boarded up, and the access at the side was cordoned off.”

The pub was known for its many charity events in the town, often raising money for Help for Heroes.

Trader Penny Hudson, who owns the Veg Shop in Northgate, thinks the pub’s owners were good for the community and praised their efforts in helping with the Cleckheaton Witch Hunt, which she organised last Halloween.

“On the whole, the owners were really, really, really helpful within the community,” she said.

“I have got a lot of repect for what they’ve done over their time.

“It’s come as quite a surprise. It’s sad to see a business close. They really have contributed to the community spirit in town by holding or supporting events.”

The listed building, once the Nags Head, has a historical connection to the area, being an old coaching inn and Luddite meeting point.
