Tom celebrates royal honour

Years of community work ended in celebration for Tom Ives when he was presented with his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Tom, who lives in Spen, began work on the scheme in 2007, and having gained his bronze and silver awards with the Air Training Corps in Mirfield, he then went on to complete his gold award with the Wakefield Open Award Centre.

To complete the programme he worked with Roberttown Scout Group as an Assistant Scout Leader helping plan events and fundraising as well as running games and activities.

He completed a five day residential cruise on the Leeds/Liverpool canal where he gained the NCBA Complete Crew Certificate. In preparation for his expeditions he completed a physical exercise programme to prepare him for the challenges needed to complete an expedition in the Yorkshire Dales.

Tom said he had enjoyed doing the awards although it had been hard work at times. He was presented with the award at Holyroodhouse, Scotland, in the presence of HRH Earl of Wessex.
