Time to thank our town's unsung heroes

Trophies will be dished out to those who go the extra mile across Kirklees at the Love Thy Neighbour bash at Batley Town Hall from 7.30pm on Saturday.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Paul Kane, has organised the event alongside the Batley Business Association (BBA) with the help of local sponsorship.

The district’s residents sent in around 120 nominations which have been whittled down to about 80 by Coun Kane and Mayoress Susan Bedford.

Councillor Kane said: “It’s a good response and it’s a little bit of something back to all these people.

“One of the things that’s enlightened me and inspired me, during my time as mayor, is the amount of volunteers there are doing some fantastic work.”

One hundred peoplehave been invited to the event, including the nominees, guests and dignitaries.

The University of Huddersfield has provided trophies for the event and the Mayor will hand out three himself.

He will present awards to the winners of the Best Friends Of group, the Event of the Year and the Best Volunteer.

Others, including Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox and representatives from arts organisation Creative Scene, will also hand out awards during the evening.

BBA chairman Andrew Marsden will compere the event.

Sponsors of the event include Locala, Jo Cox, the University of Huddersfield and Binks Vertical, which is based in Blakeridge Mill Village.

Councillor Kane thanked the sponsors for their input and specifically praised Binks Vertical.
