Time to dust off those flat caps and trainers!

Dewsbury Road Runners’ Flat Cap Five attracted more than 100 competitors from across the region last year, including five of our own staff.

It also raised £550 for our 2013 charity appeal, the Reporter Series Fund.

Organiser Tony Audsley said: “We’re really keen to build on last year’s success.

“Hopefully we’ll get a bit of fine weather this year because the route takes in the local scenery and greenway.

“It’s a really good fun race, particularly for those looking for a first race who want to start training up now.”

All runners are encouraged to don flat caps for the five-mile race first held on Yorkshire Day 2012, with a prize going to the best.

This year’s race will raise funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, the Reporter Series’ chosen charity for 2014.

The independent charity provides a rapid response emergency service to five million people in Yorkshire.

It needs £9,990 per day to keep its two helicopters maintained and in the air.

Reporter Series editor Hannah Ridgeway said: “We were so pleased when the Road Runners came to us and suggested working together again this year.

“If the thought of getting fit themselves isn’t enough to get readers digging out their running shoes, then I’m sure the life-saving work carried out by YAA every day will be.

“Every penny we can raise for them will help to make sure their dedicated teams are on hand to help people in our community.”

The race takes places on July 30 at the Leggers Inn in Dewsbury, at 7pm. Entry costs £5 for runners with clubs and £7 for all others.
