Thornhill church gets £98k boost from Heritage Lottery Fund

aN historic church has been given £98,000 to spend on completing its refurbishment.

St Michael and All Angels in Thornhill has been given the cash by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It will be spent on repairs to a window dating back to 1450 and several significant monuments, including one dating back to 1614.

A project to restore the church started in 2009 and was helped along by a £200,000 grant that the church secured early last year.

In the past 12 months the church tower and clock face have been restored and most of the monuments have been spruced up.

Improvements have also been made to the Savile Chapel, which is now back open to the public after a temporary closure.

Project manager Brian Pearson said: “Hopefully with this final grant we should be able to complete everything that needs doing until somebody finds something else!”
