The holiday company announced yesterday it wants to close its Inmoor Road office, leaving 147 jobs under threat.

The closure could lead to roles being moved to Peterborough, outsourced, or made redundant.

Managing director Reto Wilhelm said: “We fully appreciate the impact this decision will have on our Birkenshaw-based employees and are committed to doing everything that we can to support the team over the coming weeks should our proposals go ahead.

“I’d like to thank our colleagues at the Birkenshaw site for their professionalism as we now enter a period of consultation, during which we will explore all options with those individuals concerned including possible relocation or redeployment opportunities.”

Mr Wilhelm said the proposals were part of a strategy to “simplify processes and remove role and function duplication”. Thomas Cook was confident the changes would improve customer service, he added.

A 45 day consultation period will start on February 3. If the proposals go ahead, the Birkenshaw office will close by January 2015.
