THIS WEEK’S PAPER

A SCHOOLGIRL left fighting for her life after a Jeep hit her as she tried to cross a busy junction is celebrating as work begins to install four new crossings in Birstall.

Jade Newsome was in a coma for three weeks after the accident last year, and remained in hospital for three months to recover from her devastating injuries. Her dad began a campaign for a crossing into Birstall centre, and now, a year later, work has finally started at the Coach and Six junction.

ALSO: A family has been left to foot the bill after mindless vandals attacked their parents’ grave in Batley Cemetery. The headstone was ripped from the grave of Nigel and Bernadette Baptiste and decorations at the site were smashed, leaving daughter Beverley Higgins with a £1,500 bill.
