The taste of sweet success

A TEAM of people has made and sold 100 boxes of sweets in the latest stage of a therapeutic project.

The group of eight, who have complex learning needs and are cared for at the Hollybank Trust in Mirfield, have been taking part in the SPOT sweetshop project as part of speech and occupational therapy.

They have been involved at every stage of the project over the last two years, from planning their products to selling them at fundraising events, including a Huddersfield Town FC match.

Last year, a bride-to-be commissioned the group to provide retro sweets for her 1950s-themed wedding and invited them to the ceremony itself.

Hollybank speech and language therapist Rachel George said: “We are a democratic group and vote on everything.

“We decided what sort of sweets to put together in our boxes, choosing retro sweeties, to weighing and bagging them up.

“In doing these tasks, they are processing lots of different skills. We are keen to use this method as a way forward with therapy and make it a meaningful activity.

“It gives our young people and adults the chance to experience a real job.”
