SUPERMARKET giant Tesco wants to open a store in an empty Dewsbury pub.
And the news has sparked concerns from a local shopkeeper who fears his business could close.
Kevin Wardman, owner of Kevin’s Butchers, said: “We’ve put a lot of effort and time into the business – it’ll be 25 years next year.
“A big company like Tesco is going to kill places like ourselves off. Without the support of the community, it will force us to close.”
Tesco has applied for an extension to replace existing outbuildings and will apply for a cash machine, new signs and minor changes to the front, but it does not need to apply for a change of use because shops and pubs fall into the same planning category.
Similar plans for the Black Bull pub in Mirfield sparked widespread protest.
