The local authority is asking residents for their views to help shape the future of planning and development in the district.

Kirklees Council is now seeking people’s views about its Local Plan, which is intended to replace the Local Development Framework (LDF) – the planning document which was withdrawn last year after criticism from a government inspector.

The Local Plan will set out how the district will develop over the next 15 to 20 years by working out how many new homes and jobs are needed and allocating land to meet these needs.

It will also set out the areas of Kirklees that need protection, including valuable open spaces and areas with high environmental quality and historic value.

Residents and land owners can nominate plots of land suitable for development in the council’s ‘call for sites’ bid, but views will not guarantee inclusion or exclusion from the plan.

The LDF was thrown out last October because its proposed housing numbers were too low and it hadn’t fulfilled its duty to co-operate with other councils.

The number of homes needed in Kirklees could be in excess of 30,000.

You can submit views for the Local Plan over the next eight weeks until Friday May 30.

You can get copies of the early engagement report and questionnaire at town halls and library and information centres throughout North Kirklees and on Kirklees Council’s website.
