Teenager “could have been killed” in glassing incident

A teenager “could have been killed” after being hit in the neck with a glass bottle in Mirfield.

The 17-year-old was walking with friends on Huddersfield Road, near the former Swan Inn at around 11.30pm on Saturday when he was attacked.

Det Insp Mark Truelove, of Kirkless CID, said: “This could well have been a fatal incident as the victim sustained serious neck injuries.

“The victim had been with friends when they came across three other males walking in the other direction. There was some sort of altercation between the complainant, his friends and this other group resulting in the complainant receiving serious injuries, which we believed we caused by a glass bottle.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

A 16-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent has been released on police bail.

In a separate incident, a 35-year-old suffered head injuries after being hit with a glass bottle in Batley in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man was attacked outside the Le Choix Bar on Bradford Road at around 12.15am.

He was taken to hospital with head injuries.

Det Insp Andy Leonard, of Kirklees CID, said: “This incident took place while people were out for the evening socialising, and I am sure someone will have seen something, whether that be prior to, during or after the incident that may help in identifying those responsible. Enquiries are ongoing.”
