Daniel Harbidge, 19, denied the charge of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving before Kirklees magistrates this week. Welder James Haigh, of Dalton, was killed on his way to work at Richard Allen Engineering in Shaw Cross on January 2.

Relatives from both families were in court on Wednesday morning. They heard that the incident happened on Huddersfield Road at 6.40am.

Prosecutor James Weekes said Harbidge was at the junction with Temple Road when he turned into the path of Mr Haigh’s motorbike.

Mr Weekes said that Mr Haigh, 32, had been wearing a high visibility jacket at the time and that Harbidge, of Netherton, suffered a “momentary lack of attention.”

Harbidge chose to have his trial heard by a crown court jury. He will appear at Leeds Crown Court on September 18. He was granted unconditional bail until then.
