Sun shines on super show

There was plenty of inspiration for new and experienced gardeners at Dewsbury Flower, Vegetable and Handicraft Show at Crow Nest Park.

More than 1,000 people enjoyed the sunshine and a mouth-watering display of home-grown produce last Saturday and Sunday.

Numbers entering the classes for vegetables, flowers and handicrafts were up on last year and the judges were impressed by the high standard.

Children got creative in their own competition, called the Carrot Factor, which gave them the opportunity to demonstrate their skill at baking, painting, making a miniature garden or displaying flowers in a pot.

Show secretary Robert Whittaker said: “The day went really well and we were pleased to see so many people in the park enjoying the sunshine. Families brought picnics and enjoyed the day.”

There were entries in 45 classes and the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Eric Firth, was on hand to present the trophy winners.

Other attractions over the weekend included music from Golcar Brass Band, Shepley Band and Yorkshire Traction and Honley Band.

There were family fairground attractions, craft activities for children and ‘grow your own’ demonstrations in the greenhouse.

The Friends of Crow Nest Park group was there to talk about its work and show people round the wildlife garden. “This is a well-established show and there was a great atmosphere,” said Mr Whittaker.
