Streetbikes hosts bicycle giveaway for children

A COMMUNITY organisation hosted a bike giveaway at a children’s centre.

Volunteers at StreetBikes gave away 15 bikes to children and gave them cycling lessons at Savile Town children’s centre.

Four bikes were also given to women who had never had a bike before.

Group co-chair Gill Greaves used her contacts with community workers to set up workshops to teach people of all ages how to cycle, look after their bikes and stay safe.

She said: “We just make things happen at a grassroots level. We’re helping people that need help and we’re changing lives with what we do. It’s about more than the cycling.”

The group is expanding, with 14 projects planned for Kirklees in the year ahead. One involves taking children from Dewsbury Moor on a ride along the Dewsbury Greenway to a supermarket. They will buy healthy food and cook it later in the day to teach them about the importance of a good diet.
