Storms cause damage and flooding in North Kirklees

A nursery in Dewsbury was plunged into darkness after lightning struck a power cable.

Staff evacuated Child’s Play Nursery in Thornhill Road when the cable set alight at around 7.15am this morning (Tuesday).

Firefighters from Dewsbury fire station used dry power extinguishers to tackle the fire.

Crew commander Steve Carruthers said: “The lightning hit the main supply into the building and cut it right through.

“When we got there all the children were outside and the cable was on fire.

“It’s the first time I’ve been to one where it hits an electric cable like that an cut it through.”

Elsewhere, heavy rain led to flash flooding.

Arriva Yorkshire warned that all its Huddersfield-Leeds services were being badly delayed due to flooding in Cooper Bridge area near Mirfield.

Services have now returned to normal.

Trains to and from Manchester Piccadilly were also severely disrupted due to a fault caused by lightning.

The fault has now been repaired, but some TransPennine Express trains between Dewsbury and Leeds are still delayed.

There are no flood warnings in place at this time.

More rain is forecast this evening.
