A church has responded to accusations it is not keeping its graveyard neat and tidy by inviting people to volunteer to help with its upkeep.

St Mary the Virgin Church, in Church Lane, appeared in the Reporter earlier this month when some readers said grassland around gravestones had become overgrown.

But the Rev Hugh Baker from the church has defended his church’s team of volunteers, and has called on anyone concerned about the graveyard to spare some time to help out.

He said: “The area of the graveyard is nine acres, which gives you some idea of the size of the job for our group of volunteers.

“The more people we can get to to into the graveyard tackling the tough areas, the better, and I would urge anyone who wants to help out to come forward.

“Another way to help is if families take responsibility for the care of their relatives’ graves – we would be more than happy to let people do that.”

Rev Baker was keen to thank the team of volunteers who help maintain the graveyard.

“I am very grateful to all who are working there,” he said. “They have many of the surrounds of the church looking beautiful.”

Volunteers meet in the graveyard on Thursdays. To find out how you can help volunteer at the graveyard, call 01924 505790.
