Special services to mark church’s £100,000 refurb

A church is celebrating its £135,000 refurbishment with a number of special events this weekend.

Cleckheaton Methodist Church has been transformed with ceiling-to-floor banners, Mouseman furniture and a new organ.

The Mortimer Street church will celebrate the refurbishment with and reopen on Saturday, with a short act of thanksgiving for members and the community.

Reverend Roger Smith said: “We have created an attractive and inspiring space and the challenge facing us now is to use it well as a worshipping congregation and to serve the local community. T

“This weekend is an opportunity for the church to thank our architects Design Studio North of Bradford, the building contractor Walter West of Dewsbury and the many specialist subcontractors who together have renewed our building for worship and community service. People are most welcome to come along any time during the morning to see for themselves and hear the new digital organ.”

A snooker and table tennis marathon will take place in the church’s ground floor rooms will from 9am to 6pm on Saturday.

The event will feature stalls and hot food, drinks and an all-day breakfast.

A service will be led by Rev David Hulme on Sunday at 10.30am and at 6pm an expanded church choir will perform.

Guests at the Saturday thanksgiving service include Lord and Lady Shaw of Northstead and their son Major General Jonathan Shaw, who have relative John Graham Mowat commemorated on a newly-restored WWI war memorial in the church. The memorial has been refurbished with a new glass screen.

Artist Shaeron Caton-Rose, who worked with the church to design three banners and the pulpit fall, will also attend the service.

She will lead a talk about the themes displayed on the banners.

The refurbishment cost £135,000 and was funded by donations, fundraising activities and funds from the sale of the former Broomfield Methodist Church.

A new entrance on Mortimer Street and the refurbishment of the ground floor is yet to be completed.
