Danny North left the school in 1990 and pursued a career in music, eventually moving into photography and snapping such headline acts as Oasis, Music, Iron Maiden, the Foo Fighters and Vampire Weekend.

This week he returned to Thornhill to share stories, offer a masterclass in photography and persuade pupils that anything is possible if they try hard enough.

He said: “It is great to be able to give something back to students,

“I remember being just like them. It is important to inspire young people that anyone can follow their ambitions and succeed in life if they want it enough.”

The school has hosted a number of guest speakers from its former ranks as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

Guest speaker coordinator Mark Ward said: “It is fantastic to invite former students back to the academy to support our current generation. Sharing their working experience is so valuable in helping us to inspire our students.

“If they can see and hear from a former student of the academy, who grew up in the community, and has achieved a fulfilling and satisfying job, it helps them see that it is possible for them too.”
