SLIDESHOW: Morris dancers come to Mirfield

The source was Mirfield Coronation Dance Festival, a competition which attracted 10 Morris dancing troupes from across the country.

It was the second time Mirfield Town Council and Wakefield Morris Dancers had hosted the free festival.

Coun David Pinder said: “It was very successful and we had beautiful weather.

“All the groups said they enjoyed it and would like to come back. We’re hopeful we might have something that will keep going for quite a few years.”

Each troupe toured six venues in the town to perform for the crowds before a showcase event at St Paul’s Church.

“It was very close run between three groups,” said Coun Pinder. “People thought the most interesting was Locos-in-Motion. For sheer, raw enthusiasm they were unbeatable.

“Green Ginger Garland had very complicated routines with hoops of flowers and the majority decision was that they got the biggest cheer.”

The winners, an all-female troupe from Hull, received a trophy provided by the Old Colonial. Other dance venues were Mirfield Library, the Old Colonial, the Pear Tree, the Airedale Heifer, the Flower Pot and the Ship Inn.

The event was also supported by Ossett Brewery, CAMRA, Huddersfield Raynet and Mirfield Air Cadets 868 Squadron.
