Youngsters at Bywell Junior School have been offered scooter training after the area was identified as a traffic hotspot by cycling charity Sustrans.

The charity organises The Big Pedal, an inter-school competition where schools get points for the number of pupils who make journeys by bike or scooter.

School business manager Cath Sanderson said: “The children love it. Initially it was just for years five and six but Sustrans are coming back in April to do it for years three and four.

“It’s really taken off.”

The school has also been given spare scooters to loan out so everyone can have a go and it is hoped pupils will carry on the good work once the competition has finished.

Bywell headteacher Zaheda Adam said: “We’re really excited to be taking part in the Big Pedal. We hope that by encouraging our children to walk or scoot to school over the next two weeks that we will see a reduction in congestion and pollution around the school gates, and help the children feel healthier and happier.”
