Service to honour Dewsbury’s forgotten war heroes

FORGOTTEN war heroes are to be remembered at a service this month.

The war memorial in Dewsbury’s Crow Nest Park will be re-dedicated on Sunday May 20 and the names of dozens of soldiers who lost their lives in past conflicts will be added.

Currently the memorial has the names of local servicemen who lost their lives in World Wars I and II.

But at the re-dedication ceremony, the names of men and women who have died in conflicts since will be added.

Robert Scaife, who has been working to have the names to be added, said: “All being well we will have a good turnout and enjoy a good service.”

Another man has now come forward saying he has a relative whose name should be added to the memorial.

David Farrance said his father’s cousin, Edward Farrance was killed at sea 1942.

His name is on the navy memorial in Portsmouth, but not the one in Dewsbury.
