School’s mission to train a town of lifesavers

Now they are turning their attention closer to home by educating Dewsbury in vital lifesaving skills.

The Reporter is backing Thornhill’s community first aid campaign, in which the academy is offering discounted first aid lessons at the school to anyone who wants to learn. The two hour sessions will cover first aid basics, CPR, unconscious casualty, bleeding, choking, heart attacks, burns, sprains, and more.

The school’s welfare officer Amanda Griffiths is leading the sessions. “It’s these life-saving skills that everybody should learn, whether young or old,” she said. Amanda is also going into local primary schools to give free lessons. Pupils will leave with a certificate to show they have learnt the basics.

Headteacher Jonny Mitchell said: “We are delighted to be able to offer our local community first aid training. It is so important that parents, children and the public as a whole are able to respond effectively in emergency situations, knowing what to do and how to react can often be the difference between life and death.

“With our on-site qualified welfare officer who is an experienced and accredited first aid trainer, we are fully equipped to help our local community learn to be lifesavers.”

The first class in on June 5 and another on July 3 at 3.30pm, costing just £10. More sessions can be arranged to meet demand. Full days sessions for workplaces can also be arranged.
