Schools could get new classrooms

The council’s Cabinet will decide on Tuesday whether to spend £12m on new classrooms and improved facilities at nine Kirklees schools, four of which are in Dewsbury, to cater for growing need for places.

If agreed, Boothroyd Junior and Infant School will have two new classrooms, improvements to the kitchen and other alterations, as the school is expanding to take in 210 more pupils.

Headlands Junior, Infant and Nursery School is creating 35 extra places and wants to build a new classroom, which would also support the school’s specialist autistic spectrum disorder provision.

Replacement of temporary classrooms is also proposed at Earlsheaton Infant School and Ravensthorpe Infant and Nursery Schools.

Coun Cath Harris, Cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We need to cater for this increase in demand, not only to meet the basic need but also to provide good standards of educational opportunities for children and young people.”
