A £1.5m transformation of a former hospital and nursing home into a secondary school and sixth form is underway.

Zakaria Muslim Girls’ High School will relocate from its current premises in Batley Carr to the larger building once the renovation is complete.

The former hospital and nursing home in Transvaal Terrace, off Carlinghow Hill, Batley, is being stripped back to bare brick internally and adapted to form classrooms and other facilities.

Trust chairman Shabbir Daji said once relocated, the school will be able to take up to 250 pupils.

He said the move would take place after September but added that a relocation date had yet to be set.

“It’s a bit early to say, there’s a lot of work to do,” he said.

“This is a much better site, there are more playing fields and more room for the girls.”

The two buildings that currently house the school in Warwick Road have gone up for sale.

Headteacher Yusuf Jasat said the pupils were excited.
