Santa could be coming to town

The children of Dewsbury could be getting a special visit from Santa and his sleigh this year.

Ponderosa owner Howard Cook is planning to set up a grotto and a parade around the town centre for November 23, the same day as the Christmas lights switch on.

The plans are currently being drawn up in partnership with Dewsbury Town Team.

Mr Cook, who already owns the sleigh, trailer and grotto, hopes people will line the streets to get a glimpse of Santa.

“We’re hoping to put on a bit of a show – it will be something different,” he added. “It will look quite spectacular for the kids.”

If the plan gets the go-ahead, Santa will hand out sweets from his sleigh before welcoming children into his grotto and giving them a free gift.

The event will be similar to the activities that took place at Cleckheaton and Roberttown’s Christmas lights switch-on last year.

Mr Cook revealed his plans at a meeting of Dewsbury Chamber of Trade on Monday. All roads on the route would remain open during the parade.
