The Sam’s Wish to Walk appeal has now raised 25 per cent of the £35,000 needed if six-year-old Sam Bottomley is to receive treatment that could help him eventually walk independently.

A curry and quiz night organised by Mirfield Rifle Volunteers raised £1,127 on Saturday evening.

Volunteers member Tim Wood hosted the event at the Old Colonial in Mirfield.

He said: “It was our first event for the appeal and our first fully blown fundraiser as the Rifle Volunteers.

“The evening was a tremendous success and we’re delighted with the response.

“There was a lot of hard work put in by a lot of people so we’d like to thank everyone who helped ensure the evening went off so well.”

Around £500 was donated to the appeal by Thornhill runner Debbie Sayers, who took part in the Liversedge Half-Marathon earlier this month.

The fundraising efforts continue tonight with a fashion show featuring Sam’s classmates and parents from Hopton Primary School.

Tickets priced £5 are available from the Sandwich Shop and Lower Hopton News, both in Calder Road.

The show, featuring clothes from Mirfield shop Missing Label, is at the school in Woodend Road at 7pm.

Meanwhile, a bag pack is being held at Morrisons in Waterloo, Huddersfield, on Sunday March 9.

Volunteers would be welcome and should contact Karen Bottomley via the Sam’s Wish to Walk facebook page.
