Mencap’s Safe Places programme sets up special areas in public places, like libraries or bus stations, that people can go to if anything goes wrong.

Mencap’s Samantha Jones said: “There are over 60 venues across Kirklees providing this service but we hope they aren’t needed to be used every day.

“They give people confidence to travel knowing they are there should they need them, so in that respect they help people to get involved more in their communities.”

The charity is running a tour to help people remember and identify the signs for safe places, should they ever need them.

Events will be held at Dewsbury on May 13, Batley on June 2 and Heckmondwike on June 24, which require prior booking.

Meanwhile a team of 28 people from Kirklees are taking on the Yorkshire three peaks challenge to raise money for the charity. Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/teams/MikY3P
