Runners take part in Dewsbury 10k

A record number of runners ran in the Dewsbury 10k this morning.

The weather held out for the race, which reached the 1,300 people capacity.

One of the organisers, Gary Johnson from Dewsbury Road Runners, said: “It’s one of the best 10ks in the country.

“There’s lots of camaraderie and humour on race day.

“It’s a great atmosphere as it marks the start of the running season so there’s lots of people training for the London marathon.”

Mohammad Aburezeq won the race for the second year running in a nail-biting finish as he was closely followed by Matthew Hynes from Gateshead.

But in the end Mr Aburezeq clinched the title and £400 winnings, finishing in 30 minutes 9 seconds.

The top two women were from Wakefield.

Charlene Thomas came first and Julie Briscoe came in 2nd place.
