Rugby mums are put through paces for trip

Birstall Victoria U10s will visit a rugby league holiday haven in Skegness in May, and to subsidise the cost of the trip their mothers tackled a giant obstacle course.

The course, called the Major Series, consists of a 5km run complete with 17 obstacles to negotiate.

It includes a mud crawler where runners need to lie low to avoid getting caught on barbed wire, a wall of tyres to be climbed and a freezing cold ice crawl.

Six of the mothers - Michelle Legge, Jess Avis, Nikki Harrison, Joanne Hargreaves, Sasha Samuel and Alison Capstick - managed to complete the run on Mother’s Day at Bramham Park along with four friends.

They managed to raise just short of £800 in sponsorship money in the process.

Michelle said: “It was very hard work because we’re not that healthy a bunch.

“The course is a lot like Tough Mudder so it certainly wasn’t easy.

“But we thought it would be a nice thing to do for the kids. We’re so proud of them, so we thought why not let them be proud of us for a change?”

It’s not the first time the ladies have been put through their paces in aid of their children’s team - two years ago they competed in a nine-a-side rugby tournament but only had a team of six, yet they won five games and ended up finishing as the competition’s runner-up.

Birstall Victoria U10s is also looking for a new sponsor.
