Rugby gala to go ahead despite travellers setting up camp

A junior rugby gala will go ahead despite travellers setting up camp on the pitches where was due to take place.

Around 300 junior players from across Yorkshire, Humberside and Lancashire are expected to take part in Shaw Cross Sharks gala on Saturday at its Leeds Road pitches.

Junior Club Secretary Alan Smith says the gala will go ahead even though travellers are on the site.

He says he has been frantically trying top get the gala moved to Bywell playing fields.

Mr Smith said:” About eight to ten vans have turned up.

“We can’t call the gala off and I can not let all the kids down and disappoint them.

“We are left with no option but to move it to onto Bywell playing fields.”

Mr Smith has been in touch with Kirklees Council to get the go ahead for move and to report the travellers.

He has also contacted the police.

The gala takes place from 10.30am at Bywell playing fields,Leeds Road, Dewsbury

As well as the rugby there will be stalls and Super League stars will be turning up for the fun family day.
