RSPCA officers found animals being kept in squalor in Liversedge home

Officers visited the home of Jodie Louise McLoughlin, in Second Avenue, Liversedge, in January this year, where they found two dogs and a cat living in rooms covered in faeces.

Andrew Davidson, prosecuting, said the 21-year-old’s home was unsuitable for “animals or humans to live in” at Kirklees Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Her two dogs, a Staffordshire bull terrier and a brindle, were signed over to the RSPCA in February.

A return visit by the charity in June revealed her home was “still in a concerning condition”, the court heard.

Mr Davidson said McLoughlin was struggling to look after the animals safely.

Cheryl Ford, mitigating, said her client was suffering from depression after she split with her partner.

“She had been with him since she was 16 and she was left with her four-year-old daughter,” Miss Ford said.

“She could not cope and started to neglect caring for her home.”

McLoughlin pleaded guilty to failing to provide her pets with a suitable environment.

She was given a 12 month community order with 30 day activity requirement.

McLoughlin was banned from owning any animal, until further notice, and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work.

She was also told to pay £60 victim surcharge and £150 costs.
