Review of the year: March

l Messages of support were sent from around the globe when former Dewsbury Rams player Ryan Glynn broke his neck during a game.

Ryan, 25, had been playing for Shaw Cross Sharks when he was seriously injured.

Just eight weeks later Ryan he was back on his feet – after battling through two major operations and a stroke.

Ryan’s dad Mick said: “I knew from day one that he would walk again. I know his head - he’s determined.”

In the days after Ryan was injured, the club was inundated with hundreds of messages of support from well wishers as far afield as Australia, Canada and America as well as those closer to home. The club also set up a benevolent fund to support Ryan during his recovery.

Star players and professional clubs donated items for auctions and Dewsbury Beer Festival chose the fund as one of its charities for the year.

l A remarkable teenager called on the people of Mirfield to help her buy a new wheelchair that would change her life.

Mary Hinde, who suffers from cerebral palsy, needed to raise £16,000 so she could be happier and more independent.

Her mum Sarah began the Mary’s Wish appeal to raise the money for a state-of-the art chair that uses infra-red technology so that 17-year-old Mary can control it herself.

She said: “It will make a big difference to Mary because it will give her some independence to move where she wants to go.”

And just two months later, the family were delighted to announced that the target had already been reached.

The appeal raised the cash through dozens of activities, including sponsored walks and obstacle courses.

Sarah said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has raised money for Mary. I just can’t believe the response.”

l Hundreds of people braved the rain to watch a spectacular outdoor show when Dewsbury hosted its annual Spirit celebration.

German group Theater Titanick brought its special brand of street theatre to the town with a fantastic performance of The Firebirds.

The show featured daredevil pilots representing Russia, France, England and America racing through the streets. Fire effects and explosions added to the chaos as the pilots took wrong turns and tried to sabotage each others’ efforts.

Onlookers followed the race around town and watched as the teams tried to take flight by the town hall.

The crowd was then treated to a firework display and the sight of French pilot Marie flying away.

Visitors also enjoyed curries, cakes and real ale at three pop-up venues - Aroma, the West Riding and Spirit Cafe.

Earlier, Motor Hog scrap yard in Mirfield played its part by supplying a replacement engine for one vehicle.
